The Astronomical Observatory of the Autonomous Region of the Aosta Valley (OAVdA), Italy, lies at 1675 m in the Alps at the border with France and Switzerland. The OAVdA has been opened in 2003 for guided visits of students and general public. However, since 2006, its main activity has been scientific research established through an official collaboration with INAF, the Italian National Institute for Astrophysics.
At the OAVdA physicists study: Active Galactic Nuclei as part of the WEBT organization; asteroid in collaboration with the Minor Planet Center; solar corona with an innovative polarimeter for space coronagraphic missions; transiting extrasolar planets. All projects are made in cooperation with the INAF-Astronomical Observatory of Turin. OAVdA researchers have been author and/or coauthor of several papers on international journals as "Astronomy & Astrophysics" and "The Astrophysical Journal".
But the OAVdA is probably among the few observatories where researchers and scientists dedicate 30% of their time to transfer scientific results to students and public at large through initiatives of public outreach and education.
"Galilean Night in Saint-Barthélemy" is one of the several initiatives organised by the OAVdA for the IYA2009. Visitors will meet the researchers and all together look to valleys and mountains on the Moon, Jupiter and its satellites, the stars of the Milky Way with seven automated Cassegrain telescopes, 25 cm in diameter.
Would you like to see with your own eyes what Galileo saw exactly 400 years ago? We wait for you in Saint-Barthélemy!
